A little preparation before work starts makes the whole project calmer, for you and for us. Here’s a checklist for the week or two before we arrive.
Paperwork
- Have your drawings, planning decision (if you needed one) and building control approval to hand.
- Check any Party Wall notices have been served and agreed.
- Let your home insurer know building work is happening.
- Agree the start date, programme and payment stages in writing.
Clear the work area
- Empty the rooms we’ll be working in, including cupboards, shelves and anything on the walls.
- Move valuables and anything fragile well away from the work.
- Clear the side access and the part of the garden where we’ll work, and move plant pots, garden furniture and anything you want to keep safe.
Access and parking
- Think about where the skip and deliveries will go. If a skip has to go on the road, it needs a permit.
- Let us know about any parking restrictions or narrow access.
- Agree which door we’ll use, so the rest of the house stays cleaner.
Living in the house during the work
- If your kitchen is affected, set up a temporary one: a kettle, microwave and fridge in another room go a long way.
- Plan for noisy or dusty days, especially if you work from home, and consider being out on the busiest days.
- Keep children and pets safely away from the work area.
- Agree where our team can use toilet and hand-washing facilities.
Talk to your neighbours
A quick friendly word before we start, letting them know how long the work will take and when the noisiest days are likely to be, goes a long way.
